Achieving 4.85 Million Visitors

Date Posted: 2000-07-21

The Okinawa Bank Marketing Department concluded that it would be difficult to attract 4.85 million visitors to Okinawa in the year 2000, which was the prefecture’s target for this year. The G8 Summit, the small number of hotel rooms and new airline regulations increasing the price of package tours are affecting the number of visitors to Okinawa. Visitor numbers to Okinawa between January and May were 1.85 million.

To boost this to 4.85 million would need an increase of 8.2 %. The Summit is going to have a negative impact on the number of visitors to Okinawa in July because of the reduced number of airplanes coming to Okinawa and a restriction in the number of customers at hotels. However, in the long term it is estimated that number of visitors will increase, because Okinawa will attain a higher profile because of the summit.
