Open Letter to Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori

By: Kevin Hutchens

Date Posted: 2000-07-14

Dear Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori

I am writing to ask you in your position as Prime Minister of Japan to ensure debt is high on the agenda of the forthcoming G8 Conference in Okinawa. The rights of children are not likely to be realized while governments are trapped in debt ;For example in Tanzania four times more is spent in repaying debt than on primary education, and nine times more than on basic health.

Already last year an agreement has been reached to reduce the debts of the 41 most heavily indebted countries.More recently the IMF have proposed a plan to cancel 27 billion dollars of debt, freeing that money for investment in social services.

Undoubtedly more could be done;On behalf of the 1.6 billion people living in absolute poverty in the world today I would ask that you use the wealth of Japan to take firm steps at the summit to further prioritise debt relief of the poorest nations in the world.
