Okinawan Descendants In Cuba Start Society

Date Posted: 2000-07-14

There are 162 people in Cuba descended from Okinawans who emigrated to Cuba before World War II. Most of them went to work on the land. On August 6 these descendants are going to establish an Okinawan Descendants Society.

At the Society’s inaugural celebration party some Okinawans, including relatives of descendants, will visit Cuba to study the entertainment, sightseeing business and economy of Cuba. There will be peformances of Rykyu dance and karate in the National Theater of Cuba. The first emigration was 1917. More than 113 Okinawans had emigrated to Cuba by 1938. Many of them went to Cuba for Sugar cane farming. Not many facts about the emigrants survive and a lot of the descendants do not speak Japanese.
