Japanese Man In Hit-and-Run by American airman

Date Posted: 2000-07-14

On July 9, a Japanese man crossing the street near Goya Intersection was hit by Johnny Miller, stationed in Kadena. The Japanese man had injuries on his left elbow and the legs. At first, Miller made a false statement, but then acknowledged the crime.

The incident happened at 3 am when Miller hit the man who was crossing a road. He did not stop to help the man and was later arrested and detained by Okinawa City Police. He is awaiting charges but drink-driving does not appear to be one of them.

The pedestrian was treated for his injuries by a local hospital, then released. Kadena apologized for the incident and a meeting of senior Kadena commanders was convened to discuss it. The base said it would take steps to prevent a recurrence.
