American Kicks Taxi: Two Held

Date Posted: 2000-07-07

Okinawa City Mayor Masakazu Nakasone plans to lodge a strong protest to the commander of the Marine Corps and the Naha Defense Facilities Administration Bureau. Members of Okinawa City PTA Union also plan to protest.

A taxi driver said that an American kicked the door of his car while he was waiting for a customer at Kitamae, Chatan Town. According to the driver, three Americans were walking on the street ostensibly arguing among themselves. When they approached the taxi, one of them kicked the car causing a dent.

The driver got out of his car and gave a chase. He managed to grab the man who kicked his car, but his two buddies pulled the driver loose from him. All three Americans then ran away.

The taxi driver then called the police who found the two walking on the street some 200 meters from the scene of the incident. The third man who actually had kicked the taxi was not found. The police held the two on suspicion of abetting a violent attack. The police investigation continues.
