Star Player For Local Soccer Team

Date Posted: 2000-07-07

Okinawa is about to employ one of the best known faces in Japanese soccer as Ramos Ruiz, 43, best known by his first name alone, will join the local team Kariyushi FC. Ramos retired after a colorful career in Japan’s top J-League soccer in November 1998.

Ramos was born in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and is now a naturalized Japanese citizen. Kariyushi FC officials see the signing up Ramos as a major boost to local Okinawan soccer, and even see it as a possible stepping-stone in realizing one day a dream of having an entry from Okinawa playing in the top J-League. Ramos agrees. “Although soccer in Okinawa is not currently at a very high level, I will do my best to boost the level and encourage more young people to take up the game,” Ramos said. Besides the soccer field, Ramos is well known from numerous appearances on TV variety shows.
