Disrespectful Hailston Should Leave Island

Date Posted: 2001-02-23

Being that I was stationed in Okinawa last year and had the pleasure of really enjoying the local people there, I am appalled at what the General had to say about the local government. Personal e-mail is not to be sent on a government computer to begin with, let alone an e-mail that would cause an international embarrassment to the American people.

People who stay in Okinawa too long get used to the idea that we here in the states don't know what's going on over there or care. That is not true. Anyone who enjoyed their tour in Oki usually keeps up with the news over there.

I am embarrassed to think that I was once part of the team that was led by such an unthoughtful and disrespectful person.

I think the Okinawan people have a right to be outraged and demand a smaller presence of Marines after his actions. I also think they should have the right to suggest he leave the island as well.

I left Okinawa last June before the long string of embarrassments happened, but I would like to apologise for the Americans and hope that there is a way to some day regain some trust with the local people and government.
