Naha’s New Arrangements for Large Garbage

Date Posted: 2001-02-23

Naha residents now need to pre-arrange for large sized rubbish like bicycles, furniture and trees (longer than 90 cm, heavier than 10kg) to be taken away. The new system started on February 1 and the pick-ups can be arranged over the telephone.

Also, from April 1 Naha is going to start recycling electrical household appliances. Large items like televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines can be dropped off at local electric appliance stores, instead of being dumped.

A booklet that has more detailed information on how to get rid of oversized refuse was distributed to each house in Shuri on Sunday. Naha mayor Onaga visited an apartment with the booklet that carries the message: “if each citizen can reduce their garbage by the size of a lemon of each day, the government can save ¥100 million a year.”

The recycling campaign will be held in the following Naha areas: Feb 25, Mawashi; March 18, Oroku, Akebono, Izumisaki. For more information phone 098-889-3567.
