Illegal Car Dump Sites Inspected

Date Posted: 2001-02-23

Last Tuesday Itoman City organized a visit to four sites where cars have been illegally abandoned, posing environmental threats. Eighteen workers from Okinawa prefecture police station, the Southern Okinawa Public Health Center ranch office, the Okinawa prefecture Industrial Waste Association, Itoman City Environmental Department, Okinawa prefecture Waste Task Force and other organizations took part in the inspection.

They spoke to residents living near the dumping grounds who are worried that the rusting cars and leaking batteries may be polluting underground water sources. About 40 residents protested in front of the inspection team, holding placards saying “no more environmental pollution.” A farmer with land near the Fukuchi site in Itoman City said “there must be at least 500 cars on this site. A water supply source for my farm is near here and I am very worried about water pollution.”
