You Benefited From Military, So Why Curse It?

Date Posted: 2001-02-16

In response to “If I were Okinawan I would hate Americans” by Bronco Flier in the Feb 8th-14th issue. An assumption, your 22 year career was with the U.S Forces? So, basically for 17 years of your 22 year career, you did not have a problem being one of the military occupants of Okinawa, but now that you are no longer serving, then everyone else should shut up and go home to momma. I am sure that when you were a young man you did not wake up one day and say, I am going to move to Okinawa; you, like most others, were sent here. And like most others did not have any idea what to expect, you were an active participant in the military occupation of Okinawa, but now it no longer suits you since you will get your retirement check and benefits no matter where you live.

You could be like the man I met at Kuwae Lodge one day, who retired from the service in the Phillipines, but has to fly to Okinawa twice a year to receive his medical benefits at Camp Lester because the bases are all gone.

I just wanted to point out that, you have benefited from serving, and it is rather hypocritical for you to now curse the military’s existence here. If you were so disapproving of the military, then why did you participate in it for so long? Why didn't you just get out and stay here? I am sure that the Okinawans who you say should hate and discriminate against the Americans would have given you a nice paying job that would equal what you were making in base pay and cola, then you would not have to take part in the raping, beating, verbally abusing of Okinawans.
