Homesick For Shopping Malls?

By: Elizabeth Garrett

Date Posted: 2001-02-16

Having lived most of my life in Southern California, I am use to major shopping malls in every city, shopping centers every ten minutes down the road, and more places to spend money than money in my wallet. In other words, I lived in a Shopper’s Paradise. This is where charging items on one’s credit card is a way of life and cash is never a necessity. Whether it was a pair of socks or two shopping bags full of clothes, I always charged it. Even my Okinawan friends love American shopping malls

Living here in Okinawa, I have had to make some adjustments to one of my joys in life – shopping in the malls. Much to the amazement of friends and relatives, I am a mall shopper transformed into a Web shopper. When I lived stateside, I balked at the idea of shopping on the Internet and giving out my credit card number to every retailer on the WorldWide Web. Now, giving out my credit card is no harder than telling a new acquaintance my name. (By the way, I maybe desperate to shop but I am not as gullible as you may think. Don’t offer to sell me your used car because I already have one with a broken air conditioner).

I have realized that there is really nothing that you cannot buy through the Web if you want it bad enough. Based upon recommendations from friends and relatives, and my own tireless search for new products on the Web, I have actually comprised my own Internet shopping site list. However, I must make a disclaimer to any “frugal” spouses of shoppers. Don’t blame me if your spouse decides that shopping on the Web has become his/her new way of life. Where else can a person shop any time of the day and night? Also, surfing and shopping on the Internet has therapeutic benefits and can be more beneficial than psychotherapy in coping with the stresses of the modern world.

Below is a small spreadsheet of some of my favorite shopping sites. The following are some other internet sites that you might want to peruse during a typhoon or a rainy day: bettycrocker.com (kitchenware), bluelight.com (you guessed it, it’s Kmart), barenecessities.com (lingerie), brooksbrothers.com (expensive women’s & men’s clothing), cratebarrel.com (kitchenware and housewares), currentcatalog.com(stationery), gymboree.com (expensive but excellent quality children’s clothing), jcpenney.com, hallmark.com(stationery and email cards available), nordstrom.com, touchofclass.com (home décor and linen), nwf.com (National Wildlife Federation - for you animal lovers out there), ebay.com (advertised as “the world’s online marketplace”), eddiebauer.com (women’s & men’s clothing), spiegel.com, sears.com, toysrus.com, walmart.com, and the list goes on and on. Just remember, Al Gore, the “father of the Internet”, would be proud of you if he knew you surfed on the net!
