Hot Tans in Cold Weather at Sally’s Tanning Room

The beaches and hot weather on Okinawa provide a prime setting for achieving a rich tan. But with the arrival of winter, clouds and cold weather replace not only the summer heat, but the summer sun as well, leaving residents with little alternatives for tanning. Realizing the number of sun-worshipers left “in the shade,” Okinawan native Ichiro Kikumura came up with a solution.

In September of 1998 he built Okinawa’s only tanning salon, “Sally’s Tanning Room.”

Situated in Ginowan City, approximately 15 minutes from Kadena Air Base, Sally’s Tanning Room is in an incredibly convenient location. There is even an ample amount of designated parking for the salon, which is a rarity on Okinawa.

Upon entering the salon, patrons are welcomed by a friendly staff eagerly awaiting the opportunity to take care of their customers. Although their English is limited, it is not much of a hassle – smiles can go a long way! The cozy décor and tranquil atmosphere only add to the serenity of Sally’s, which helps make the entire experience very relaxing.

Unlike tanning salons in the U.S., people wishing to have a tanning session don’t need to make an appointment weeks in advance. Customers can visit Sally’s 7 days a week between the hours of 9am and midnight. To begin a session, simply select which watt level of the tanning machine (between 1600 and 6000) and time limit for the process you would prefer from a “menu” at the front counter. There are various tanning machines to choose from. There is, of course, the standard tanning bed, in which you lay down and can adjust the height of the overhead lamps. Sally’s also offers standing tanners and a few “face only” machines. All tanning beds are located in separate rooms for your privacy.

Those who are new to tanning should certainly start with a lower wattage and shorter time limit than those whose bodies are used to tanning regularly. As patrons become used to tanning, they can gradually increase both the wattage and time. However, if you are tanning more than twice a month, a moderate wattage and time limit to keep up your tan is highly recommended.

When the session is over, patrons are welcome to use the gender-appropriate shower rooms, which provide towels, toiletries and hairdryers. Not only does Sally’s Tanning Room provide safe and effective tanning with comfort and convenience, they also offer reasonable rates and a generous discount for military ID card holders.
