Visions of a Long Vanished Okinawa

Date Posted: 2001-02-16

An Exhibition of photographs of a long disappeared Okinawa opened in Shuri Castle Park on Saturday. They are the work of Dr Egbert Walker, a botanist who visited Okinawa three times in the 1950s. He took thousands of photos of natural scenery, street scenes, vignettes of everyday life and the children of those days. Three hundred and twenty two of his pictures have been put on show.

Walker’s photographic record stretches from the northernmost tip of Okinawa Main Island through its central and southern areas and out to the islands of Miyako, Yonaguni and the Yaeyama group.

The photos are being shown in the visitor lobby of Shuri Castle Park until March 4.
