HAA celebrates 10th anniversary on Okinawa

Date Posted: 2002-02-15

For years, Hispanic families living on Okinawa have gathered together at parks and homes to share experiences and celebrate traditional cultural feasts. At one such gathering in 1991, one individual came up with the idea to create a group to heighten cultural awareness for all people and to promote Hispanic culture to everyone on Okinawa. The group would also offer a family atmosphere to all its members serving their country while stationed on Okinawa. The Hispanic American Association (HAA) was formally established on Jan. 12, 1992 and has been very active on Okinawa ever since.

The HAA is open to all individuals who wish to share and learn about Hispanic culture; Hispanic lineage is not a requirement for membership. Since its establishment 10 years ago, people from 10 Hispanic countries as well as some U.S.-born individuals have joined the group, with many experiences being shared. The HAA currently has 30 members and holds meetings every third Saturday on Kadena Air Base.

The groups is involved in fund-raising activities during the year that enable it to help out other organizations such as the Red Cross and the Special Olympics as well as grant scholarships to students. On Feb. 22 the HAA will be celebrating its 10th anniversary and hosting its first fund raiser of the year, the Valentine’s Dinner Buffet and Dance, at the Kadena Officers’ Club from 6:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Come out and enjoy a fun-filled evening while supporting the Hispanic American Association. For more information call Pedro at 633-2261, Cecilio at 633-5187 or Cindy at 090-7587-1009.
