Close Race Expected in Urasoe Mayoral Election

Date Posted: 2001-02-09

Urasoe’s mayoral election was announced on Sunday. Three candidates are running for mayor, including the present incumbent, Kenichi Miyagi, looking for a second term.

The election will focus mostly on the issue of whether or not to move Naha naval port to Urasoe. Miyagi is against the port-moving plan. He was nominated by the Social Democratic, Local Socialist and Communist parties.

Another candidate is a former Okinawa Assembly chairman, Mitsuo Gima, nominated by the Liberal Democratic, Conservative and supported by the Koumei party. He is in favor of moving the port.

The third candidate is the former head of an Okinawan cultural institution in Housei University, who belongs no party. He also favors moving the port.

These three candidates ran a very closely contested election four years ago. The current campaign is sure to be just as close.

A City Assembly election will take place at the same time and Urasoe City will be decked in election colors until voting day on Feb. 11.
