Date Posted: 2001-02-09

A Japanese Self-Defense Forces ship and a fishing boat collided early on Sunday morning south of Okinawa. The JSDF audio detecting ship “Harima” was hit by the tuna fishing boat “Dai 11 Hiyoshi-maru” 110 km south of Okinawa main island.

The captain of the Naha based fishing boat said “I turned off the engine when I saw the ship but my boat just kept on going until it hit.”

The 2,850 ton JSDF ship with 36 crew was hit on its right side, while the two crew, nine ton fishing boat sustained cracked bows and a dented left side.

The JSDF in Yokosuka said their ship was sailing at 5 km an hour when it spotted the fishing boat seven minutes before the collision, that the fishermen did not respond to a warning and left the scene afterwards.

Marine security head quarters questioned the fishing boat captain on suspicion of negligence and obstruction. The crew of the JSDF ship were also questioned the next day.

There were no reports of injury.
