Okinawan Long-Life Party for US Grandmother

Date Posted: 2001-02-09

Gene Hoffman, the 97 year old mother of a Yomitan resident, celebrated her long life at a traditional Okinawan celebration called Kajimaya on Sunday. Some of the 200 at the party had come all the way from America

The ceremony, literally meaning windmill in Okinawan, included a parade of six cars, which circled the northern part of a local village.

The event was planned by Hoffman’s son,Gilbert, when he went to see her in California last year and six other relatives came over specially from the USA. Daughter-in-law Betty was pleased to have the celebration here, as there is no equivalent for feting longevity in America.

Gene Hoffman was beaming with happiness during the celebration.
