Kadena Marina Underwater Photography Contest

By: Allison McQueen

Date Posted: 2001-02-02

Kadena Marina is hosting a Hot Shot Underwater Photography Contest starting today, 1 February, and running through 31 March that is open to all SOFA status personnel. The contest is a great opportunity to showcase your underwater photography skills while enjoying the majestic turquoise waters surrounding the islands of Okinawa.

The underwater photography contest boasts underwater photography professional John Chandler as one of the judges. He will also be conducting a free slide show and photo clinic to help contestants hone their underwater photography skills. During the competition, weather permitting, the Kadena Marina will host two Kerama Boat Dive trips in February, with free tanks and air for contest participants. This will give an opportunity for competitors to meet other underwater photographers. “The Kerama Boat Dive trips are a great scuba and photography confidence building activity”, states Kadena Marina Dive Shop Manager, Tony LeCrone. “John Chandler has volunteered to escort the photo contestants on these trips” he adds.

The competition is open to advanced shutterbugs, amateurs, divers and snorkelers. With three levels of underwater camera classes, the contest allows participants with housed, amphibian, or “point and shoot” cameras to compete against each other in the following categories: Macro, Wide Angle, Fish, and People. These categories allow participants of the same skill and camera level to compete shutter-to-shutter for the title of Okinawa’s Hot Shot.

The nominal registration fee for the Kadena Marina Wet Shoot is $20 per contestant. This fee includes a contest T-shirt, up to four rolls of the required contest film, development of the contest film, and a ticket to the Kadena Marina Wet Shoot Bar-B-Q and awards ceremony on 31 March at the Kadena Marina Beach. Kadena Marina in association with Fathoms Dive Shop will award one Grand Prize winner and first place, second place, and honorable mention in each category. Contestants can enter at the Kadena Marina Dive Shop from 1-28 February.

For a full list of contest rules and more information, please contact the Kadena Marina at 634-6344.
