Win a Goat, Sample Goat Milk Ice Cream, Try Goat Sashimi

Date Posted: 2001-02-02

For the first time a goat market will be held at Zanpa Point Park this Sunday February 4 from 9 am. The Hija Achinei Ichi, as it is called in the Okinawan language (hija meaning goat and achinei ichi, market) is an unusual event. It will allow those who attend to experience traditional Okinawan goat dishes such as soup, cheese, ice cream, milk, sushi, noodles, goat milk bread, and more. First time tasters are particularly recommended to try the goat soup, which has a unique flavor they are unlikely to have come across before. There will also be other products, such as new varieties of goat cheese and milk.

Okinawans eat more meat than mainland Japanese, particularly pork, but their most expensive delicacy is goat meat. On special occasions the locals prepare and cook a whole goat to eat with their friends, neighbors and relatives in celebration. Although long known as healthy eating in Okinawa, goat meat has become newly fashionable too, as a good protein source that is low in calories.

Time tested dishes include goat soup, goat sashimi, and chiirichii (sautéed goat blood). However, goat meat has lost popularity among young people because of its strong smell. Now it is becoming necessary to produce goat products without the pungent smell, like cheese and milk, to keep them popular among Okinawans. The organizers of this event hope to introduce new goat products to Okinawans.

There will be a lottery with the prize for the winning draw of a goat worth ¥30,000. Tickets to enter the draw are ¥1000. If the winner does not have an inclination to cook the goat, a new pet for the back yard might make an interesting alternative. For non goat gamblers, Ryukyu dance and music will be performed.

In addition there will be a goat fight (hija ohrase) and a petting zoo for children. The petting zoo, which is in the park all year round, has rabbits and ducks as well as goats. Zanpa Point Park is a good place for family outings even if you miss this event.
