Mayor Rejects Waste Disposal Plan

Date Posted: 2001-01-26

A joint waste disposal project for Naha and Haebaru City, suggested by Naha mayor, Takeshi Onaga has been rejected by his counterpart in Haebaru City.

The Naha mayor wants the 300 tons of waste produced by both places to be reduced by up to a third, by recycling bottles and cans, etc. The energy used to burn the waste in an incinerator would be made available to variety of industries.

The “Southern Okinawa Zero Waste Project” is the idea of Michiko Iha, a professor of Ryukyu University. The mayor of Haebaru city, Toshiyasu Shiroma, is not planning to take part in the scheme because he thinks it is unrealistic.
