Traffic Survey Shows Up Okinawa Badly

Date Posted: 2001-01-26

Okinawa prefecture announced the result of its 1999 Road & Traffic Census last Thursday, showing that conditions are significantly worse than on the mainland.

Average traffic density is 10380 cars per day in Okinawa, much higher than the average of mainland Japan, which is 8040 cars per day. Although the number of cars has dramatically increased in Okinawa, road conditions canít cope with the surge.

Illegal parking on busy streets is 5.3 cars per kilometer in Okinawa. This is higher than mainland Japan which has 4.0 cars per kilometer. Average illegal parking on prefecture roads is even higher at more than seven cars per kilometer, showing how frequently Okinawans park illegally.

Also the percentage of sidewalks per road, catering for bicycles and pedestrians, is 62.7 percent in mainland Japan. In Okinawa it is extremely low, at only 4.2 percent.
