Okinawans out in force over holiday

The prefectural police department has estimated the number of people who visited places of interest on the island during the first three days of the new year to be 578,000, the same as last year痴 figures. For the first temple visit of 2002, 150,000 visited Naritasan Fukusenji Temple in Nakagusuku; 135,000 went to Naminoue Shrine in Naha; 110,000 paid a call on Futenma Shrine; and 70,000 made a trip to Gokoku Shrine in Naha. In addition to religious sites, 30,000 people visited Shuri Castle; 21,469 traveled to Ocean Expo Park in Motobu Town; and 15,460 stopped at Gyokusendo in Tamagusuku Village. Moreover, 16,000 people attended the countdown festival held on the beach at Ginoza Village.
