Asato River Bridge Open Again

Date Posted: 2001-01-19

A Naha real estate agent who bought a tiny piece of land adjacent to the entrance of a bridge crossing Asato River and then closed the bridge when Naha City refused to pay him for the land, has agreed to open the gate to the public. The bridge has been a popular shortcut for local residents for some 30 years and closing it caused many complaints from the locals.

The real estate agent bought the land at an auction for 2.5 million after discovering it by accident and then demanded that the city buy it for considerably more. Naha City officials refused to pay, saying that the financially strapped city had no budget for such a purchase.

However, after several weeks stalemate, the agent agreed to re-open the bridge to the public, based on promises from the city that they would consider getting a budget for the purchase in the future.
