Rowdy Youth Mar Coming of Age Ceremonies

Date Posted: 2001-01-12

Crowds of rowdy young men, some of them intoxicated, disturbed several Coming of Age ceremonies held in various locations in Japan and Okinawa over the weekend.

Monday was a national holiday to welcome young people who had turned 20 the previous year, into adulthood. In some cases, local mayors who were scheduled to give a speech to the youngsters became so angered over the unruly behavior that they stormed out of the festival. In Okinawa City, the mayor reportedly told the noisy crowd to shut up or get out, only to be told by the crowd to get out himself.

In Tokyo a group of young men reportedly drove in a convertible right into a hall where the ceremony was held, drinking beer and tossing around Chinese firecrackers.

Adults claim that these kind of incidents never happened before 1990, and that the young people of yesteryear respectfully listened to the speeches. Could it be that the politicians in those days had something meaningful to say and worth listening to?
