Mongoose Catching Scheme On Target

Date Posted: 2001-01-12

The Environment Agency started capturing mongooses on Atsumi island last year and in two months has caught more than 1000. The agency has a target of capturing 3000 of the animals, which are caught in traps.

The Environment Agency pays 2000 for each mongoose caught and this incentive has led some who have registered for the Mongoose Capture Program to set more than 100 traps. However not only mongooses find their way into the traps. Sometimes they are discovered containing cats.

Mongooses, not native to Okinawa, were introduced to the islands in 1979 so as to reduce the population of Habu snakes.
