John Chandler’s dive books offered at author’s farewell sale

Date Posted: 2002-02-15

The author of two books on scuba diving, John Chandler is a diving enthusiast and is well respected in the international dive community for his work as a photographer and an instructor. His two books, “A Diver’s Guide” and “A Diver’s Scrapbook,” have been invaluable tools and gifts for numerous divers on Okinawa.

His latest book, “A Diver’s Guide,” offers directions to many of the best sites on island as well as in-water guides for snorkelers, kayakers and beach lovers. “A Diver’s Guide” is broken down into sections by separating the island of Okinawa into different zones. With each dive spot listed in his book, John discusses the ease of entry, the experience level needed to dive this location, the type of coral and fish in the surrounding area, the level of visibility and the amenities found in nearby areas. John also discusses what to expect once you get in the water, the best time of year to dive the specific location and the easiest points of entry. At the end of the book, he also talks about several special dive sites, including the Yonaguni ruins and the USS Emmons. This book is a priceless resource for all divers seeking to take the plunge into Okinawa’s waters. The Diver’s Guide will be on sale at John and Teresa Chandler’s farewell art exhibition at Kubasaki High School this weekend. The book’s special price is $9.90.

“A Diver’s Scrapbook” showcases Chandler’s underwater photography talent as well as the beauty of Okinawa’s undersea world. This book is a great gift for divers since it is an excellent resource with valuable information about different dive sites on Okinawa, but it would also serve as a treasured coffee table book in any home. The pictures are very colorful and extremely clear and will have you itching to take your first dive and see the world that John has captured first hand. The hard cover “Diver’s Scrapbook” sells for $15 at the exhibition.

Acclaimed American artists to hold art exhibit

John Chandler, a retired Marine, is the author and photographer of the book “A Diver’s Guide.” He is highly respected in Okinawa’s diving scene and has been an avid diver since the age of 15. He and his wife have lived on Okinawa for more than 15 years and claim it is their second home. Theresa has enjoyed art as a hobby all her life and began pursuing it as a career in 1996.
