Date Posted: 2001-01-07

Musicians Namie Amuro and Tetsuya Komuro drew the largest crowds of the New Year’s event at their free concert that they gave outside Okinawa Convention Center in Ginowan City.

According to organizers, over 110,000 people attended the event dubbed “Grandez Vous in Space, with many tour organizers bringing fans from mainland Japan. Many people were lining up for the concert from early in the morning in order to secure as a good position as possible.

Yonaguni Island, Japan’s Southernmost tip also organized a big festival featuring local junior high school brass band, laser show and fireworks. Taiko drummers bid farewell to the old year at the sunset, and again welcomed the year 2001 at sunrise. The rock ’n’ roll never stopped, with the most ardent festival goers partying well into the first of the year.

Internet buffs had their own festival at Naha City’s Onoyama Park, where organizers had set up computers and hooked up with various sites around the world showing real-time events.
