Tourists Like Outer Islands

Date Posted: 2000-07-01

The outer islands are fast becoming the destination of choice among tourists visiting the prefecture. According to a survey of 1,800 tourists visiting the prefecture, 42 percent would like to visit Yaeyama, 18 percent wish to go to Miyako, followed by Kerama, Kume and other smaller islands.

The reason for the increasing popularity of the outer islands is because of the possibilities of various water sports and other leisure activities in unspoiled environments, cheap accommodation and less crowds than in resorts on Okinawa main island. However, large numbers of tourists were perfectly happy to stay on the main islands, citing sight seeing opportunities and the conveniences of large urban areas available to them.
