3 Police Fakers in Court

Date Posted: 2000-07-01

The first hearing in a case of three police officers accused of faking test results in a suspected drunken driving case, opened today in Naha District Court. The accused officers say that the police policy of setting a norm of how many violators such as drunken drivers, they have to catch during a night shift, puts an unreasonable burden on officers on duty.

They claim that the prefectural police have followed the practice of doctoring evidence in drunken driving tests at least since 1973. They also claim that their superiors ordered them to work overtime or assigned them to less attractive tasks, such as walking the streets and ticketing parking violators, if they did not meet the quota. The three were dismissed from the police force after the incident came to light.
