American Short Shorts Film Festival in Okinawa

Date Posted: 2000-07-01

American Short Shorts Film Festival 2000 will present its program at Naha Civic Hall Saturday and Sunday. This is the second time for the program to be shown in Japan. The films shown at the festival will feature various genres, including comedy, suspense, drama, and animation.

Although the short film is nothing new to the American audience, it is a fairly new concept in Japan. Last year, the festival made its debut in Japan, and proved to be incredibly popular. This year, the festival will bring its array of short films to five lucky cities in Japan.

A short film is defined by its length (usually less than 30 minutes) and by the film-makers skills and creative use of time. Some big name directors have had their beginnings in the short film world. George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino are just a few.

Short films are also a guaranteed source of entertainment as the directors are forced to tell their story in less time and on less money. What the films lack in funds is usually made up for in their unique content or message. This year's selection of short films range in length from 37 minutes to 55 seconds. Some of the films included this year are "The Personals" and "Seventeen Seconds to Sophie".

Tickets for the festival are currently on sale at Ryubo Department Store (098-867-1171) and Okinawa Mitsukoshi Department Store (098-862-5111) in Naha City. The admission is 1,200 in advance and 1,500 at the door. For more information, contact American Short Shorts Naha Office at 098-836-0282
