Jusco removes Prima Ham products from shelves

Date Posted: 2003-02-08

A food additive in Prima Ham Company products has triggered their removal from supermarket and department store shelves. Japanese retail giant Jusco Co. removed all meat and ham products of Prima Ham Co. from its retail outlets, Tuesday after the meat processor admitted using a food additive which may cause allergic reaction in some people.

Jusco stopped selling the products in all 11 Jusco department stores and 750 ValuMart supermarkets nationwide on Feb. 2. The products include the best-selling asparagus bacon that has sold over 470,000 bundles since last April.

Prima Ham puts the blame on its Shizuoka Prefecture-based supplier. “Our investigation revealed that our supplier had a shortage of approved additives due to unexpectedly strong demand on their products. They used another egg-white based additive instead without our knowledge since June,” a Jusco spokesman said. He also said that since all food processors are inspected and supervised by government officials, Jusco did not inspect the products, and relied on paperwork provided by the supplier. “The government regulations specifically forbid the use of additives that can cause allergic reaction so we had no reasons not to believe that only approved additives had been used,” the spokesman said.
