New Airport Road to Open

A part of the extension of the Okinawa Expressway from Haebaru to Naha Airport will open June 28. The new road will cover a 5.1 kilometer stretch from Haebaru to Tomishiro. The whole project is scheduled to be completed by 2002.

The construction of the mostly elevated highway started in 1988. The cost of the extension is expected to reach ¥88.4 billion.

The extension is expected to benefit especially tourists as the buses from the airport to middle Okinawa and northern resort areas do not need to drive through the congested streets of Naha City after the road opens.
