Japanese Flight Controllers to Train at Kadena

Date Posted: 2000-06-23

Japan and the United States agreed Wednesday to dispatch Japanese flight controllers to Kadena Air Base for a month of training after the G-8 summit in July. The agreement is in line with the earlier U.S. decision to return control of the radar system at KAB to Japan.

The radar system at Kadena, which controls all civilian and U.S. military flights within an 80-km radius, was designated to be operated by the U.S. military on a temporary basis after the return of Okinawa to Japan in 1972. Japan has been calling on the U.S. to return control of the radar since trouble with the system last October that caused some disruption of commercial flights to and from Naha.

According to officials at the transport and foreign ministries, the training will take place at "an appropriate time after the summit," which is slated for July 21-23 in Nago.
