G8 War Memorial SpousesíCeremony

Date Posted: 2000-06-16

Okinawa G-8 Summit organizers are planning an official ceremony at the Okinawa Peace Memorial for the spouses of the world leaders participating in the conference. The idea is to spread the image of Okinawa as the premier promoter of world peace. Officials say that conducting such a ceremony would get worldwide attention through the world mass media present here through the summit.

The peace memorial consists of a wall listing the names of all those known to have perished during the battle of Okinawa, soldiers and civilians alike, regardless of nationality. Currently the wall has 237,000 names and more are engraved, as they become known. All spouses of the G-8 leaders are scheduled to attend except the First Lady who is in the middle of the campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate, and has not confirmed whether she will attend. Some sources say that the First Daughter Chelsea will come instead.
