Local Politicians Are Lazy And Greedy

Date Posted: 2000-06-16

According to a survey by the Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper, voters suspect that their elected prefectural assembly members are lazy, and more interested in collecting their pay than running the business of creating rules and regulations for local people to live by. Many voters say that during the past four years the current assembly has done very little or nothing.

In another survey taken among the candidates vying for a seat in the upcoming election, 43 candidates supported Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine’s push for a 15-year limit for the new MCAS to be constructed off Henoko. 32 of the candidates disagreed. 55 of them said that public referendums on important issues are important.

And on the question of whether the elected prefectural assembly has been lazy, 69 of the 76 candidates advised the assembly to take a more active role in local affairs, and bring out more initiatives in order to enhance the business and lives of Okinawan people.
