Thousands Try For Base Jobs

Date Posted: 2000-06-10

Over 12,000 people have applied for a job on-base by the May 31 deadline at Naha and Okinawa City Public Employment Offices. Assistant Director of Hiring Section Teruhisa Higa said that what has changed over the years is that the majority of applicants these days are young people fresh from schools and colleges. “These people have their own version of the American Dream,” Higa said.

Lots of people have waited in line for years, but always put in a new application year after year. The bases hire annually less than 200 new workers on average. Higa said that many of the applicants are also fluent in English, having studied overseas and are eager to use their language skills.
