New Sensors To Catch Speeding Cars

Date Posted: 2000-06-10

Speeding on Okinawa Expressway will become a risky business with an automatic speed checking device going into operation today. The new device has sensors installed underground that measure the speed of vehicles passing by. Those with excessive speed will be photographed and the speeding ticket will arrive by mail.

Unlike automatic speeding sensors on prefecture’s other roads, most notably on Highway 58, the device on the expressway does not give a warning. Its location is even kept secret. Officials say that since the toll fees on the expressway were cut in July last year, the number of cars using the expressway has shot up more than 30 percent. Many of those cars are traveling at excessive speeds, they say.
