Incinerator’s N.I.M.B.Y. Problem

Date Posted: 2000-06-10

Hoping to find a solution to Okinawa’s increasing problem with what to do with trash and waste, Okinawa Prefecture, local municipalities and businesses have formed a consortium to build and operate a large-scale incinerator.

Officials say that all landfills within the prefecture will be filled to the capacity in two years. The landfills are now almost the exclusive means of garbage disposal.

Members of the Prefectural Committee for Planning Trash Disposal say that the biggest problem is that citizens have yet to perceive and fully understand the idea that they have to pay for their trash disposal one way or another, either with taxes or billed directly.

Another problem is that even though every community is all for constructing the incinerator, no one is willing to accept it at their neighborhood.
