Anti-Gangster Moves Mulled

Date Posted: 2000-06-10

‘Naha City Citizen’s for Removal of Gangsters’ group expressed their concern in a meeting yesterday about the re-emergence of gangster offices in the city. Officers from Okinawa Prefecture Police, lawyers, city and prefecture officials and educators took part in the meeting that was chaired by Naha City Mayor Kosei Oyadomari.

Police officials told the meeting that about half of all gangster groups in the prefecture are concentrated in Naha City. They also said that such groups are becoming bolder and mask themselves as normal businesses when they rent offices.

Police said that trade in stimulant drugs is especially becoming the business of choice for the gangsters here. Lawyers participating in the meeting suggested that city ordinances could be modified to force the gangsters out of their offices.
