Dumped Car Owners Warned

Date Posted: 2000-06-10

Urasoe and Nishihara Cities have enacted city ordinances requiring owners of junked cars that are left on roadsides to be responsible for the disposal of those cars.

In addition, those owners can be fined, and face an extra fine if they have removed the number plate from the car in order to conceal the ownership.

City officials hope to remove the discarded cars from their streets before the upcoming G-8 Summit. They say that they have counted a total of 417 dumped cars along the streets of their cities that are subject to the new ordinance.

Officials say that they will first send a written warning to the owners requiring them to remove the car by a certain date. Should the owner fail to act, the city officials will then remove the car and fine the owner.
