Bottles Turned Into Curtains

Date Posted: 2000-06-10

The Okinawa Planning Company has started accepting plastic bottles for recycling in its new plant in Gushikawa City. The bottles are commonly used for soft drinks and sodas, and have until now been discarded and ended up in landfills.

The new plant can handle up to 40 tons a month of plastic waste. At the plant, the bottles are cut up into plastic flakes that then can be reused to make carpets, curtains and new bottles.

The company has set up collection points in 12 municipalities throughout Okinawa main island. Officials at the company say that caps and labels should be removed from the bottles when people sort out the trash for recycling.
