Date Posted: 2000-06-02

A fifth-grade elementary school student drowned in the school swimming pool during a swimming lesson in Nago City, yesterday. According to Nago Police, 60 fifth grade students were having a swimming lesson with the aim to swim the length of the 25-meter pool.

Two teachers stood watch at the poolside. One of the students seemed to fail his attempt and reached the poolside after swimming about eight meters. According to eyewitnesses he then covered his nose and mouth with his hand and attempted to continue swimming but sank to the bottom of the pool.

One of the watching teachers jumped into the pool and pulled the student from the bottom and started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while the other teacher called the ambulance. However, when the ambulance arrived, the studentís heart had stopped.

Further resuscitation efforts in the hospital proved futile and he was pronounced dead. School officials told investigators that all students were checked for health problems before the lesson in the pool. Police investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
