Group Wants Naha – Nago Railroad

Date Posted: 2000-06-02

A citizen’s group is proposing construction of a railroad between Naha City and Nago. A narrow-gauge railroad existed between the two cities before the war. The group conducted a symposium on the subject Saturday, with 170 people attending.

At the symposium panelists pointed out that Okinawa is the only prefecture in Japan that has no railroads.

The group considers a railroad to be the best solution for the traffic congestion that especially troubles areas around Naha City.

The group proposes that the construction of the railroad should be the prefecture’s next large-scale development project and should be taken on right after the G-8 Summit is over.
