Indian Ship Explodes – Crew Safe

Date Posted: 2000-06-02

An Indian registered oil tanker went up in flames in the East China Sea off Okinawa. The Maritime Safety Agency patrol boat which reached the scene, found no trace of the 34 crew who had reportedly been on the ship.

The entire crew was later found in another lifeboat and rescued by Chinese authorities. The patrol boat reported that they were not able to board the ship because of the intense heat.

They found two of the ship’s lifeboats near the ship but no one was aboard. The ship had earlier reported engine trouble and an explosion onboard. The tanker was reportedly on its way empty from South Korea to China when the explosion occurred. No oil leaked into the ocean.
