Okinawa welcomes lunar new year in traditional style

Okinawa celebrated yet another New Year’s Day on Feb. 12, which marks the first day of the year according to the lunar calendar. Okinawans tend to follow the old-calendar traditions particularly in fishing communities such as Itoman, where fishermen put out to sea with special flags adorning their boats in hopes of a big catch. The city market was also filled with people buying ingredients for the New Year’s feast. Seventy-seven-year-old Mitsu Shingaki confided with a smile that she had been making preparations since the day before and added that it is the lunar New Year that gives her a real feeling of celebration.
