Date Posted: 2000-05-27

Awamori exports to Taiwan are soaring according to Okinawa Awamori Association. Last year 50,000 bottles of awamori was sold to Taiwan and association officials see a very big chance to expand the market there considerably.

To achieve its goals the association has organizes awamori tasting parties and surveys in Taipei and other cities.

Another factor for optimism is that all restrictions on importing alcoholic drinks to Taiwan will be removed from 2001. At that time, foreign distillers will also be able to establish their wholly owned production facilities in Taiwan.

One hurdle remains, through. Awamori when read in Chinese means ‘hot spring,’ and some aspiring exporters fear that the cool and refreshing image they are trying to portray for their brew may not shine through.
