Flag Flyers Frustrate Officials

Date Posted: 2000-05-27

Officials at Yomitan Village are causing some strays of gray hairs among protocol watchers of the G8 Summit by refusing to arrange flags in the village’s official displays in the order deemed proper by the protocol.

Yomitan officials say that if the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have their protocol rules, so have Yomitan. “We have our own idea of priorities here, and we display the flags accordingly,” defiant village officials said. Yomitan has three sites where the flags are flown. Prefecture officials have reportedly called the Yomitan Mayor’s Office several times over the past few days, but to no avail so far.

Foreign Ministry officials in charge of protocol matters say that although the order of the flags is not written into law, it is “important that the protocol is followed at international meetings, otherwise they degenerate into chaos.”
