Shanghai – Okinawa Flights Planned

Date Posted: 2000-05-27

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine is visiting China. The main purpose of the visit is to promote the planned opening of direct flights between Shanghai and Okinawa. The Chinese side is reportedly viewing the plan positively.

At the moment the route is served by charter flights, and in view of the increasing popularity of the route, officials on both sides think the time is right to start regular flights.

Representatives of China North-West Airlines said the route is natural considering that China and Okinawa have deep relations going back for centuries.

They are also urging Japanese government officials to ease visa requirements. About 100 members of civic and cultural groups are accompanying the governor on his trip.

Currently Shanghai is connected to Japan with direct flights from five cities. An additional six prefectures, including Okinawa, have petitions pending to start direct routes.
