Chinese Spy Boat Off Ishigaki

Date Posted: 2000-05-27

The 18th Maritime Safety Agency spotted what they described as a Chinese intelligence-gathering vessel inside Japanese territorial waters off Ishigaki.

The Ishigaki station of the MSA sent a patrol boat to the scene, but the Chinese ship refused to stop and eventually fled to international waters. This is the fifth such incident this year. In all incidents the intruding ships have escaped.

Officials at the MSA said they were not sure what activities the Chinese ship was engaged in. They said the ship had been observed towing five long cables when their patrol aircraft spotted it. They added that they did not know the purpose of the cables.
