Dog Mothers Three Wild Pigs

Date Posted: 2000-05-27

A dog has become a surrogate mother to a litter of wild pigs in Nago City. A friend of a local farmer Taro Henzan found three wild piglets when hiking in the jungle May 6, and brought them to Henzanís farmhouse. Henzanís dog, Tone, had had four puppies of her own three days earlier, and after briefly hesitating accepted the additional three.

The event is the more surprising since Tone is a pure Ryukyu Dog, and according to her owner, used to hunt wild pigs and other game. The word has got out and Henzanís farm is fast becoming a tourist attraction, with visitors turning up at the farm every day, wanting to see the extraordinary animal family.
